Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students don't have the basic necessities in their homes, let alone books. I want to offer them a variety of books so that this is one need they'll never go without. All 130 of my students know that they may check out a book from me and read it for as long as they need.
My students attend a Title-one school in Utah.
96% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. There are 29 different languages spoken in our school and 69% students are of color. We are a 7/8 middle school with 750 students. They LOVE to read but lack the resources to purchase their own books. Many don't have the opportunities to get the public library or book store. They need a strong class library so that they will have an endless supply of good literature.
My Project
Most of my students beg me for mystery books. My mystery collection is not as great as it could be. I'd also like to change the set-up of our class library to be organized by genres. I'd like for them to feel like they're in a book store. Most of my students know what type of book they like reading: sports, fantasy, mystery, or action. I want to make it easier for them to find the books that interest them. I'd also like a class set of dictionaries to keep at our tables. I have many English language learners who need quick access to a dictionary. If I had a class set, I could keep enough on each table in the small compartmentalized bins. I would also like to keep constant supplies of pencils and red pens in the bins.
Literacy and a love for reading are the keys to success for my students.
If they are not loving to read now, in 7th grade, there is no way they will be successful when they move on to high school. Please make this a possibility so that I can continue to provide them with quality literature for their reading pleasure.
