Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to read books! For example, at the beginning of the year my students were having a difficult time reading books however when I asked students to choose a book they would want to read from Amazon, they became excited. I ordered the books for my students and they started to love to read. My students were excited about sharing what they read in their books when I had one-on-one conferences with them.

They are incredibly intelligent and thoughtful.

For example, they love to have discussions with their shoulder partners and the class as a whole. Once we played Jeopardy while reviewing the book, Night by Elie Wiesel, and they wrote their answers on whiteboards. The entire class was engaged and had fun with the whiteboards. My students get excited about learning and teaching one another. For example, my students participated in a Jigsaw Activity while reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Students were excited when they were placed in their home groups and became the experts of a particular chapter in the book. They love working collaboratively!

My Project

This will be my first year teaching and I am very excited! Working with a mentor teacher for the past year has shown me all the classroom supplies that I will need to supplment for my students. I learned that my students loved exit tickets on sticky notes, and I found magnetic dry eraser notes that can be reusable! I have also learned in this past year that a lot of my students were carrying loose paper in their notebooks, so I bought them folders to use. I was attempting to look for notebooks as well on Amazon, but I couldn't find any good ones. Since I am a new teacher, I am getting these school supplies as a first time buyer. Hence, that is why I have some supplies that I would need in order to run my class effectively.

Additionally, some of my student's favorite activities included collaborative work such as the Jigsaw activity, Philosophical chairs, and making a poster as a group.

The desk is for my students to work in collaborative groups. I plan on placing the desk in the middle of the classroom or towards the back, so that students have additional space to sit in. This is also a way for me to slowly move towards flexible seating in my classroom.

Lastly, I asked a few of my students to go on Amazon to look up books that they would love to read. I chose those books to build my new classroom library. I wanted to make my library student centered and really give them the choice of choosing the books. In order to improve literacy in Kern County, I want to make my classroom library the centered space for reading and writing.
