My Students
My classroom is comprised of 22 kindergarten students from various and diverse backgrounds, representing at least five different ethnicities. My students are interested in learning about the world beyond their own neighborhood.
Many of my students are first-generation English speakers, who serve as interpreters for their family and other students in our school.
One of my kindergarteners recently interpreted for the school office. My students face a variety of challenges beyond the classroom, such as transportation, housing, clothing, and food insecurities. Despite these challenges, my students are excited to learn and grow each day.
I love teaching and I am excited to go to school every day! We are a class family where my students care for each other. I have always said that I am on a mission field in my classroom, and I know I am making a difference one child at a time.
My Project
Learning to sit and work together is a critical skill all children must develop to succeed in school. Because of the pandemic, many of my students did not attend pre-kindergarten in person, therefore, they have not interacted with other children as they would have had pre-pandemic. Sadly, because of this many of them do not know how to interact with others.
As Mr. Rogers said, "for children, play is serious learning." Playing in small groups is important because it causes my students to interact and learn from one another.
My students rotate daily through the writing table, reading table, listening table and a meet the teacher table. The new tables will be instrumental in facilitating daily centers, allowing my students to sit comfortably and work together at the tables as they learn. The three larger tables will help my students develop interaction skills by allowing eight of them to talk and learn together at one table.
