Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the excitement you felt when you showed your friends your new school supplies, the first week of school? Many of my students never get to experience that excitement, because their parents aren't able to purchase basic supplies for them.
I teach kindergarten to an eager group of English Language Learners.
Our school is located in a high-poverty neighborhood, so many of their parents are living well below the poverty level, with more than one student to buy clothes and supplies for. Although my students are excited to learn, the lack of supplies often leads to interruptions in our class, making us all less productive.
My Project
The paper and pencils I am requesting would ensure that my students always had fit writing tools within reach. Since my students have lunch at a time when many are actually eating breakfast, their stomachs hurt due to hunger pangs by the end of the day. However, the snacks I am requesting would allow me to give them something to hold them over until they go home and eat another meal. The thermometers and bandages I am requesting would also help me avoid trips to the office, by caring for my students myself when they get cuts or scrapes, and to have accurate readings of their temperature, in case they want, or need, to go home.
Having these resources in our classroom would help us run a lot more smoothly.
We would have fewer interruptions throughout the day, which would help my students keep their focus and momentum as they learn something new!
