My Students

I teach music through a grant program that integrates core subjects into the arts. On any given day, I see grades K-6 walk through my classroom, where we explore the world, language, math, and sciences through music.

My school is located in a suburb of SaIt Lake City.

It is new, and the students and teachers have settled and created a thriving school community. I teach the whole school of over 1,000 students every week. They are very eager to learn and enjoy the integrated music lessons. They know that in my class, even if they don't particularly care for music, they will learn something new from a subject they enjoy; whether it is language arts, social studies, math, or science. Everyday they give me fun stories to take home and share, and I look forward to going to work everyday because of them.

My Project

I have been building a music program for three years at my school. We play instruments and sing folk songs all day in my classroom. As part of establishing a solid music program, some instruments need maintenance, such as ukuleles, while new instruments need to be purchased to meet needs in the classroom.

I have a beautiful class set of ukuleles that desperately need new strings.

They have been played twice a day, everyday by 5th and 6th graders, for the last two school years and the strings are showing serious wear and tear. These new strings will bring new life and longevity to my ukuleles, as well as improving the tone and playability for the students.

As part of now running an established music program, music literacy skills are truly apart of my everyday class. I now am using boomwhackers (arranged as xylophones) to teach music notation to my younger musicians. Currently I only have enough sets for students to share a set of instruments with a partner. I would like to lower the ratio to 1:1. The xlyotote kits are an easy, affordable, and accessible way for students to learn the valuable skills of reading and playing music.

Playing a musical instrument while reading music is shown to improve communication in the brain as it creates new pathways for information. The supplies will help me help my students gain the benefits musical instruments.
