Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I began creating our classroom library several years ago and about 90% of the books on the shelves have come from funded DonorsChoose projects. My original intention was to create a diverse library, so that my ELLs could find books that interested them. This intention still runs through my veins, but it has grown ten-fold. My ELLs look to read these books to help them not just become better readers, but to become more knowledgeable of history/current affairs, to learn about various cultures, and to experience middle-school topics that they may relate to. I am very proud of our library and grateful for the books we have.

Having a classroom library, filled with high-interest books at their disposal, can help these children see the joy in reading.

The books that are being requested will be used for in-class reading as well as at-home reading. Students will be free to select whichever books interest them, as well as which language they prefer. We begin each class with 10 minutes of independent reading, and students are also expected to read at least 20 minutes at home each night. As you can see, reading is a top priority for me and as the months progress, reading becomes a priority for my students. They take their reading time seriously, and administrators have noticed that students truly read during those 10 minutes; they are actively reading! These books will be well loved and appreciated by my students. Thank you for taking the time to read this project!
