This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students I teach are in a comprehensive classroom. All of our students have a disability that ranges from Autism to Genetic Disorders and more in between. On top of that, they come from a county with a high poverty rate, which makes the challenges they face even harder.
My students are some of the most amazing students around.
Although they all have significant disabilities, they are the sweetest most well-mannered children I have met. They have always been more concerned about helping others, instead of worrying about what others can do for them.
One of the many goals for us as Special Educators is to have our students ready for the world when they leave us at 21. Teaching them to become a responsible and engaging member of society is a big part of that. Our students work extremely hard in the classroom and I want to give them every tool and experience I can to help them succeed.
My Project
The students in my class participate on the Unified Sports Strength and Conditioning Weight Lifting team. Unified Sports is a division of Special Olympics and the last few years we have brought home top medals. Because the poverty rate in our county and among our students is high, it is very hard for them to get anything new.
We were just blessed with brand new team jerseys and would now love to get new shorts to go with them.
Our team has worked so hard to accomplish all that they have in the past few years. They never complain about not having new uniforms and were so excited to learn they were getting new jerseys. They always give their all when they compete, so I want to give them all I can. The addition of new shorts to go with their new jerseys will give my team a winning look to go along with their winning streak.
