My Students

"Ms. B, can I try again?" I never get tired of hearing this! I work with special needs children who have difficulty with speech and language development.

My students attend a NYC public school and all receive mandated speech-language therapy to help them access the curriculum.

Their communication needs vary greatly. I work on improving their receptive, expressive and social thinking skills as well as speech intelligibility. Many of my students are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Selective Mutism, Intellectual Disabilities, ADHD, Social Communication Disorders and Cerebral Palsy.

In March 2020, my students faced an even greater challenge when schools were closed due to COVID-19. Teletherapy was a new experience for both myself and my students but we persevered. Overnight, I had to learn about digital platforms as well as completely rebuild my therapy toolkit since I could no longer use my hands-on manipulatives. My students had to work harder than before in order to continue to make progress towards their IEP goals. Currently, we continue to encounter new hurdles as learning is being done both in person and remotely.

My Project

I am asking for a gift certificate to TeachersPayTeachers (TPT) which is an online website which has materials created by teachers for teachers (or speech pathologists in my case)!

Since I have a caseload of very diverse students with a wide range of needs, using the academic curriculum in my speech sessions often isn't enough.

The materials on TPT will not only help my students reach their speech goals but they will save me HOURS of work. These materials are not only great resources but they are super engaging and motivating for the students. One of my new favorite finds (and the students' too) has been BOOM cards. These digital card decks, which are sold on TPT, are animated with fun graphics. They help to target many goals including retelling stories, understanding vocabulary, following directions, expanding sentences, improving grammar and much more. The best part is I can use them with both my in-person learners and receiving teletherapy at home.
