This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in my class are part of the school's dual language program. This means that all students are learning material in both English and Spanish throughout the year. Approximately half of my students are native Spanish speakers and thus learning English as a second language throughout the year. The other half of my students are native English speakers and must learn the Spanish language and also meet lesson objectives in Spanish.
After several years at our school, most of these students are bilingual and able to read, write, and speak in two languages!
How commendable, especially in this day and age. However, due to the high language demands of learning all subjects in two languages, our students need even more visuals than most.
My Project
Our classroom carpet has seen many wonderful years of use but sadly it is showing its age. Tattered and stained it is no longer as inviting of a learning space as it once was. Not to mention it is far to small for our growing fourth graders.
Our students deserve the optimal learning space and a new rug is just what we need.
This new classroom rug will be bright and inviting. It will allow for a new comfortable reading and gather space. Students will be able to gather here for whole group reading lessons and math game demonstrations. Not to mention it doubles as a great social studies resource since it also has a map of the United States.
Our new rug will also need to be well kept and cleaned regularly. Therefore, we need a vacuum which we can use to clean it. Keeping a clean learning environment is also important because it means fewer students become sick and miss vital learning time.
More than half of students from low‑income households
