Do you remember your favorite spot to read when you were a kid? My class talks a lot about searching out a perfect reading location for home reading, and it seems that this year we need to do the same in class. We need to replace our old, threadbare, scratchy rugs with something soft and comfy.
I love the diversity of our urban school and the way the kids come together to share their learning experiences.
They are full of energy and enthusiasm, and very generous about giving one another a helping hand. They love to read and share their reading with partners.
My Project
We use our rugs for everything, class meetings, whole class lessons, read aloud time, small group work, extra help sessions, board games and puzzles on rainy days. Our current rugs are showing their considerable age and need to be replaced with new ones that are welcoming rather than distracting because of old stains and edges that are disintegrating. My kids need to feel that they are in a happy place.
Part of our reading curriculum encourages kids to be more conscious of making sure they have a supportive reading environment.
They are learning to do this for themselves at home. However, most of the responsibility for the classroom environment comes to me, and I can be in denial no longer. Our ancient rugs are almost depressing and we desperately need something that is more cheerful to sprawl out on and enjoy a good book with friends.
