My Project

As a first year English teacher in an inner-city school, there is a lot to love about my students; their humor, wit, and creativity are all things I love about them. What I don't love is my bookshelf. Among the various renditions of Poe and the used college textbook anthologies, there are few if any books that spark interest in my students. They are a diverse group of individuals and they do not see the diversity reflected in the reading material provided to them. How can we expect our students to read if they find nothing relevant?

This project will help ensure that my students have a variety of literature at their fingertips.

They will be able to choose a book they will enjoy, where they see representation, to help strengthen their reading and comprehension skills. This project will allow us to do more independent reading and freshen up our book reviews to include new material.
