My Students
Do you remember the bullies at your elementary school? My students can tell you exactly who they are but they cannot tell you what to do about them. Yet!
My students define multicultural.
They are 38% Anglo, 14% African American; 16% Alaska Native, 7% Asian, 6% Hispanic, and 18%Multiracial. Over two-thirds of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch but we are not a Title 1 school. Many of my students are the children of military personnel. My school is an older school with very little technology.
My students have very few resources. Many of my students are 2 years below grade level. 1/3 are receiving services for ELL.
My Project
This is my first year at this grade level and I have very few resources for my children. I am deeply concerned about bullying in my classroom. In order to combat the very real problem of bullying, I plan to use the copies of Bullying in the Schools as the basis of a series of lessons for all my students. I also plan to develop additional SEL (social emotional lessons) experiences utilizing literature with my struggling readers. After the entire class has studied the problem and brainstormed solutions we are going to create simple public service announcements using the tablet. This new technology will enable my students to write the script, write and edit the titles and then photograph and do voice overs for the PSAs. We plan to share with the school during Parent Teacher Conferences.
Bullying in a problem in many schools.
It is certainly a problem at my school because my students are teased when they cannot read like other students. This project will help my students develop their skills in reading and writing and presenting. Students will also learn how to deal with bullies. In turn my students will become strong, productive members of our school community.
