City life can often be void of sensitivity and as a teacher of young children it is my responsibility to teach it in my classroom. Wouldn't the world be a better place if all children were taught to respect others, celebrate diversity and accept others as they are. I teach pre-kindergarten to 18 wonderful children. Every child receives free lunch in our large, urban school in the Bronx. Our families are hard working people who want their children to receive the very best education. I have noticed that when children are young they are so accepting of others but as they get older, this often changes. Children can be insensitive and intolerant to others. We must all teach our children at a very young age what it means to be socially sensitive and respectful to others. We must create an environment in school whereby all children feel good about themselves and care about others. I would like to share with the children a set of books that will teach understanding differences and empathy for others with special needs. The four books discuss deafness, blindness, physical handicaps and mental disabilities. I would also like to introduce children to children from a variety of multi-cultural holidays and celebrations. It would introduce the children to traditional dress, food, presents and different cultural events from around the world. An outstanding book entitled "Masai and I" would give the children an opportunity to compare cultures and accept differences in others. A puppet as well as a teacher's guide comes with the book to reinforce this concept.
