Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day begins with Readers Workshop where students are able to learn to read at their own level. Because I have so many low level readers, it is vital to be able to differentiate the activities that they are offered. These materials will allow all students to access material at their level.

Our learning community is located in a suburb of a big city and has 728 students.

It houses students from many cultures with one thing in common. Their desire to learn. Our classroom has 23 students, 13 girls and 10 boys where 15 of them come from homes that speak 2 or more languages. 13 of these students began the school year reading below kindergarten level and struggle to stay engaged in learning each day. They learn by doing.

My Project

This year our class was given 6 3rd generation iPads to use to help engage my struggling learners. These iPads are old and the cases do not provide the protection needed in order to stay in working condition in the hands of 6 year old students. My students need heavy duty cases and a charging station in order to use this technology for both readers and math workshop. This will allow my English language learners to access a computer program to help them learn English and the entire class to access reading and math programs. We are also in dire need of low level readers for my 13 low level readers and a stapler. This will allow all students to either be independently reading or on technology every day during readers/math workshop.

My students like all 6 year old students want to use technology.

They want to experiment and they want "play." Children of the 21st century yearn for technology. It helps them to focus on learning without knowing that they are learning. They will learn to care for their tablets, charge them and develop a sense of ownership.
