My students need new math materials, such as rekenreks, to help them learn the Common Core Standards for Math.
New standards, old materials. My students need new materials to learn the new standards at the new rigorous levels.
My 28 first graders have amazing focus and ability.
They attend a public school in Illinois, many are second language learners and the use of hands-on manipulatives are key to their learning. My students success in math will be greatly enhanced with this amazing tool.
A rekenrek is a math manipulative developed in Sweden. It allows students to slide beads and see addition right at their fingertips. The class rekenrek as well as the individual student rekenreks allows for whole class demonstrations as well as practice and mastery for each student.
The new Common Core State Standards have changed the skills taught in first grade.
Addition has a much stronger focus and students are expected to understand it at a much higher level. A class set of rekenreks will allow for the individualized instruction necessary for my students to internalize addition.
