This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This is a new class for our school. Adolescents on the autism spectrum who attend classes in the mainstream but who will need supports throughout the day and will attend homeroom, speech, social skills, and other groups and 1-1 interventions will be in this room. It will be the place they go to for comfort and regrouping when they are overwhelmed, as well as where they go to celebrate and share their successes.
My Project
These materials will help to create a safe, engaging space for students when they are in my room for social/emotional support, academic interventions, or interventions from other service providers. Imagine you are a freshman in a large school of 2,000+ students. You have seven different academic teachers, six periods a day. Loud bells, laughing voices, new smells. Imagine now that you are a young person with autism, who may have sensory processing issues making this environment especially uncomfortable or even hostile. When you enter my room, with home-like furniture, you can breathe, sit, relax, talk. The traditional hard surfaces in classrooms do not invite comfort, de-escalation, or collaboration. These seats do.
