Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When children are reluctant readers they avoid the library. To them it represents what they are having the most difficulty with. As a first year teacher, quite a few years ago, I was given an old, incomplete set of ripped and torn books to use with a class of reluctant readers. This made teaching reading difficult. Students are motivated and attracted by new things, colorful things. I often brought supplemental materials to my class that were up to date and colorful. The students response to these materials was wonderful.
When I came to IS 10 three years ago, the library was as sad as those old books. There were ripped books on the shelves, dust everywhere, tables with formica missing and mismatched tables and chairs. We have a fabulous librarian. She has been working at IS 10 for over twenty years, and needed a few new ideas. I am such an enthusiastic teacher that she was willing to listen to my suggestions. We have rearranged our library to make it more kid friendly with new and colorful books and signs. Now all that is missing are some new tables and chairs.
Our kids would benefit from this improvement to the library because I believe that they will recognize the changes and enjoy visiting the new/old place. Being a school with at least 90 percent free lunch, our school cannot offer us help to purchase these tables on our own. We are requesting two table and chair sets (one table and five chairs each). Our goals is to eventually receive a total of six sets of tables and chairs. After all change does take time, and we are making progress, I hope you can help to make our library a more inviting place for young readers.
Thank you for your interest in our school.
