I am the librarian in a K-5 school in an area with an extremely high poverty level. Students come to me for a 45 minute related arts class where I teach a short lesson and help them check out books. They also have the opportunity for open checkout if they want to exchange a library book on a day when they don't come to class with me.
My students love to read new books!
They get so excited every week looking for something new to read! I love being able to support their learning by providing them with interesting book choices.
My Project
My school has adopted a new reading series this year. One of the requirements for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders is to read a book related to their learning topic for homework each night. Our library collection does not have enough books that are focused on these topics to provide a book for each student.
I would love to have enough books available for each student to take home a book related to what they are learning in class for their homework assignments.
These new books would help students relate better to what they are learning and expand their knowledge of these topics.
