My Students
After not being in physical school for the past 5 months, I am very excited to finally be able to work directly with my incoming 7th graders (even though it will only be partially as we open with a hybrid schedule). With all they have been through over these past months, especially being isolated from their friends and trusted adults at school, I want to be here for them to listen to all that they need to share about what they’ve been through and their feelings and reactions to all that’s happened in the last 5 months. I want to be able to help them understand what’s been going on around them in regards to recent social issues. I am hoping to provide a copy of the novel New Kid by Jerry Craft for each of my students to read at home and at school so that we can read about and discuss the events in this story so students can better understand and connect them to their own lives.
My Project
Our 7th graders will be on a hybrid schedule, 2 days in school and 3 learning from home. This novel will be used across learning environments to touch upon diversity and inclusion and help them understand better recent social issues in our world. It will also help with their ability to socialize with their peers in collaborative partnerships (in-person and virtually) and help with social-emotional health. Being able to have their own copies of the novel will allow them to read and learn in school as well as at home.
