My Students
As a special education teacher, I have the unique experience to work with each of my students on a one-on-one basis each day. I teach students with disabilities ranging from Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, to different ranges of intellectual disabilities who come from all over our county. Despite the disabilities that my students are faced with, they do not let these disabilities define them. They set goals for independence and to become the best they can be! My students are working toward mastering academic, social, functional, speech, and fine motor goals. My job is to help them achieve these goals.
My students are unique, diverse learners, who thrive on motivation and positive praise.
As a low incidence teacher, I have the opportunity to teach students with many different exceptionalities; however, one common thread among all of my students is a love for technology. I teach by the quote, "All students can learn; Just not on the same day or in the same way." Making sure that each of my students have the tools that they need to be successful is my main goal!
My Project
The students in my classroom enjoy using technology to learn and practice new skills. Due to fine motor deficits, my students have difficulties using the ChromeBooks and computers that they are provided with at school. Having another iPad in our classroom would promote independence in allowing my students with the opportunity to complete academic assignments without the assistance of myself or the paraprofessional in the classroom. Having a touch screen is beneficial for the students, as it eliminates the use of a mouse or touchpad that is difficult for students with fine motor needs.
My students love using technology to practice academic and functional skills in the classroom.
After a lesson has been taught, students are able to use the iPads to complete activities that align with the standards. They are able to practice these skills using technology, which is more intriguing to my learners than paper and pencil assignments.
