This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing and very energetic. They love learning to play their instruments or sing. I love teaching them. The biggest challenge is having enough instruments to provide to all the students in need. We have over 180 students in our music program and it keeps growing!
We have a diverse population at our school both socioeconomic and ethnic.
The students are eager to learn and enjoy the challenges and rewards to learning music. I typically arrive an hour before school and meet several students to practice before school starts and regularly have students in my room during lunch and after school practicing and hanging out. They love to be here.
My Project
This flute will be loaned to a student(s) in need of an instrument but who is not able to afford to rent their own. This donation will put another instrument in the hands of a deserving child who wants to learn to play and make music. They will learn how to put the flute together, how to play it, and how to read music. Based on the grade level, it will either be given to a new 6th grader each quarter as they rotate through their elective classes and these students will learn music like Hot Cross Buns and Mary Had a Little Lamb in the couple weeks they have. If a 7th/8th grader is loaned this instrument they will have it the entire year and will learn the same music as the 6th graders and much more as they stay in. This instrument will be in numerous concerts throughout the year and many future years to come.
Though we have many instruments to loan for free to our students we do not have enough.
The program has continued to grow and has outgrown the supply of instruments we have. We do several fundraisers a year to help pay for supplies, instruments, repairs, etc... but have struggled to keep up with the growth. This donation will go a long way in helping us put an instrument if the hand of every deserving child at our school who wants to learn. Music may be why they get up for school each day.
