Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For the upcoming school year, I will be transitioning to a new school, a new grade level, and a set of new and exciting learners. Transitioning from 5th & 6th Grade to Transitional-Kindergarten and Kindergarten will be an exciting change for me. With that change comes new demands for supports for students in the primary grade level setting.
The students I'll be working with are kids that have Mild/Moderate Disabilities and Functional Skills Learning Abilities.
My desire is to create a classroom environment where these kids feel safe, respected and valued. See, the neighborhood and boundaries that my new site will be at is tough. Majority of the students are from low-income households, the school is on 100% reduced lunch; a Title I school. The school has a large transient population due to families moving around often for work. The neighborhoods aren't safe, filled with drugs, gangs and violence. I want to provide a haven for my students where they can forget about the chaos around them, even for just a little bit.
My Project
As a teacher, you want to provide the best learning environment for your students. This includes an environment that is safe, sanitary and organized. My project is requesting items to help ensure that my students in my combination class (TK/K SDC with Mild/Moderate Disabilities) are afforded the same space that their general ed peers would have.
When students are safe, organized, and sanitary, they are able to better focus on the actual learning that is taking place.
I aspire to use the requested containers to help my students remain organized when they are exploring stations throughout the classroom. I hope to use the safety gate to ensure that my students who are identified "runners" stay safe within the walls of the classroom. Given that this particular classroom has two doors, it is ideal to keep one gate at the door that exits the classroom, where as the other door is to a hallway within the school grounds.
My goal is to increase the amount of productivity that takes place in my classroom. This will happen when my students can easily identify the resources available to them through the bins. Their art will be hung to dry on the drying rack, and they will be kept in their learning environment with use of the gate.
