I am moving to another school next year and would like to create a learning environment that is welcoming for them to not only learn, but be able to relax in a learning environment.
Creating a bulletin board for a calming corner and creating a reading nook are the materials that are included.
The calming corner will also include fidgets and a weighted stuffed animal that I purchased this year. Making the calming corner colors which will calm as well as including messages to reassure them of their belonging in the class will allow them comfort without being too direct which often sets students off since this has been used so frequently in classrooms. I have collected books and resources to support reading and math manipulatives to support math. These would be housed on the bookshelves for student use either during assignments (math manipulatives) or after they were finished (reading books). I have purchased math manipulatives this year that I sit in crates on desktops for students to use, but having a space to house them that is accessible to students at all times would be better. The rug will be used for students who do not want to sit at their desks and could be used with lap tables that I have purchased this year.
This is a Special Education classroom, where social emotional learning and the feeling of belonging should be a focus so that they can overcome the hurdles of their disability to reach grade-level content.
