Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day, in Math class, the first thing we do is take out our homework, notebook, textbook and calculator. Many questions can be done analytically and verbally. However, students need to see how to solve problems with a computer algebra system or graphing via screencasting.
Many of my students take the AP Calculus BC or Computer Science A exam each May and do very well.
As a result, some of my students go on to major in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics at some of our nation's top Ivy League and Technical Colleges.
I try to keep in touch with my students after graduation to see what professional and career goals they may have met over the years. I am happy to report that I have found that several of my students have gone on to become teachers, professors, engineers, doctors and scientists in their own right. I am very proud of my students,
I am privileged to be their teacher and I have been blessed with the opportunity to help them fulfill their dreams.
This project is all about helping my students succeed in my class, in their college majors and in their chosen professions or careers. Please help!
My Project
Any time I am teaching a new topic in class, I make it a point to record the lesson as a ScreenCast for YouTube. If you watch one of my ScreenCasts, you will see everything I write on the SmartBoard and everything I say as I write. I accomplish this by setting up my PC with ScreenCasting software as well as attaching a USB Mic to my SmartBoard. One crucial piece of hardware I would like to add to the mix is a Chromebook. I usually record live and have student input during the lesson with a tablet but it needs replacing. So, I can pass the Chromebook around to the students when they have something to contribute to a particular problem we are trying to solve. If my students are working in groups, I will still be able record the lesson as I walk around the room with my Chromebook controlling the SmartBoard remotely. I can connect the Chromebook to the PC over WiFi and write on the Chromebook with a stylus instead of writing at the SmartBoard. Using the new Chromebook will help make our ScreenCasts all the more interactive.
We need a second Chromebook for my Computing Independent Study students to control a Linux Cluster over WiFi that they are building.
