Many of the students in my classroom have experienced trauma in their lives, and school is their safe place. My classroom serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. My students work hard and they love to explore, discover and learn.
The typical student in my class struggles with basic phonemic awareness and letter recognition.
About 90% of my students are African American or Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population.
My Project
Our school has taken on a new literacy program. It is really pushing our young students to achieve higher-level thinking in kindergarten. I am requesting some new literacy centers for my students that are gaining skills faster than others. I am asking for centers that will help with phonemic awareness, word building, and sentence structure. The majority of my students are ready to move on to the next level and these activities will help bridge that gap. These are also activities that can be done without much assistance from me, and that leaves me to continue working with the students that need extra guidance.
