Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in a 4th grade, general education classroom. I have 26 students enrolled in my class. My students are very talented young individuals who come from a high poverty section of New York City. They face challenges outside of school, but they always do their best to succeed every day. My school is 100% free breakfast and lunch.
My students are very ambitious, and I am constantly amazed by their ability to strive to do better.
They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
My Project
Since the beginning of the year I have strived to instill a love of reading in each of my students. My students read during guided reading, independent reading, literature circles and even during other academic subjects.
Since my students love to read, I try to keep my classroom library updated with new reading material as often as I can.
However, the bookshelves in my room give me limited space to put them on the shelves!
New bookshelves would provide me the opportunity to display a variety of genres for my students to read. I would be able to organize the books in different bins with labels to make them more accessible for my students. Having bookshelves in different sizes would also be helpful due to limited space in my classroom.
