This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
The book club consists of students of all grade levels who are interested in sharing their love of reading with other students. These students include a diverse group of highly-motivated readers. They meet weekly to plan what books they will read, organize fundraisers and literacy events, and to talk about books! Our school is a Title 1 school with the majority of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. While they love books and libraries, buying 10 books a year for book club is not possible for all members.
This project provides books for students to read and to discuss the books in the club's weekly meetings. By providing books to all members, we enable them to develop reading and critical thinking skills needed to do well in college and the world. Also, in the discussions, they learn how to listen and agree/disagree with ideas using evidence and respect. Moreover, reading fiction has been shown to create empathy. Thus, participation in book club, which requires books for each student, creates citizens who are prepared to engage in the world through student in higher education and through literate and empathetic engagement at work and in their communities.
In Their Own Words
As we continue immersing ourselves into the Lunar Chronicles, Red Queen series, and Emily Dickinson poems, our club is also eager to introduce the event, Movie Adaptation Night. The purpose of this event is to encourage interest from our members and other students and gain more awareness of our club. In addition, the members voted on the top five picks of the One Book, One New York Program. The overwhelming interest was on The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao As members we are excited to expand our reading genres and encourage diverse topics.
Included in a recent literary assembly about novels and poetry with diverse topics, we want to be leaders in promoting diverse books by choosing Junot Diaz’s novel. In addition, we will organize a movie adaptation event around World War Z to rally others to compare and contrast novels and their film counterparts. Many people don't realize how many classic films were first written as novels and many are interested in how the two mediums differ. Such novels include the cinematic classics Jaws and Jurassic Park.
In conclusion, we hope with this provided donation that we add a new element to our club activities and attract more interest. Our members are already looking forward to finding the differences and parallels of film and literature and on diverse topics. I hope to make the most of this opportunity to bring together both club members and other interested parties under a common interest. Thank you to our previous donors for helping us get this far in the school year and we hope for more wonderful experiences!
