Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

The book club consists of students of all grade levels who are interested in sharing their love of reading with other students. These students include a diverse group of highly-motivated readers. They meet weekly to plan what books they will read, organize fundraisers and literacy event, and to talk about books! Our school is a Title 1 school with the majority of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. While they love books and libraries, buying 10 books a year for book club is not possible for all members.

Through book club student strengthen their reading skills and develop teamwork and empathy. By reading diverse books for pleasure, student will become stronger readers. Reading fiction in particularly has been shown to develop empathy for others as students read about characters from different backgrounds, genders, classes, and time periods. They also learn to work together to select books each month and organize projects for the school. Finally, in discussing the books, they must learn to allow for variances in opinions and interpretations. In creating this project, they have practiced writing and organizational skills.

In Their Own Words

As the new Book Club President, I hope to draw in the next generation of readers with these novels. I am asking a donor to donate eleven copies each of Cinder by Marissa Meyer and Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard for each of the current and incoming club members. I chose these books in order to meet our goal of getting 5 new members (doubling our membership) by offering them popular YA novels that include fantasy and adventure.

As the new Book Club President, I plan to draw in the next generation of readers with these intriguing novels by revitalizing the club. I plan to keep the discussion of books an interactive and exciting experience. I also want to encourage activities that brings out each member's creative opinions and thought process. Such activity would include debates of plot and character development and brainstorming alternate scenes.

Sadly this spring we had to say goodbye to many of our senior members, including our club president. While this coming fall we look forward to bring new members to the club, I want to make sure that the club and what it stands for thrives in our school. I want to make sure that this year's book club provides the same opportunities that this club has given to me and the environment to express our love of books openly.
