My average day in the classroom begins when I welcome my eighth-grade students including regular students, special education students and students with emotional needs. I want my students to succeed.
My students like to participate in the school drama club which is why I sponsor this activity.
I teach in a large, diverse, K-8, high poverty school in an urban area of Philadelphia that experiences crime. Our school receives Title I funding, and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students come to school eager to learn from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters or extended family living.
My students are the most eccentric, funny, and smart kids you would ever want to meet. Skill levels and overall level of support vary by student. Some of my students require additional academic support, and some require additional emotional support. One thing that is universal is our desire to work together.
On the first day of school, we identified ourselves as a family. A family takes care of one another and looks out for one another. This is what we do. We work together to accomplish our goals.
My Project
Over the past couple months, we have been reading selections by Kasie West in our classroom. This project is requesting her newest novel, in addition to two of her older titles for our use in the classroom.
Organization is an important part of any classroom setting.
The new pocket charts will allow me to organize our assignments on our closet doors and make them easily accessible for students who need additional copies or materials.
Finally, we are responsible for creating a bulletin board for the school. Our idea is to make a "Growth Mindset" bulletin board, using our strategies for overcoming adversity. The new materials will help us create this new bulletin board. While we are working in class, whether it be on writing assignments or reading various novels, my students seem to work best while there is music and sounds playing in the background. This has always seemed to help them reach the next level of academics in our classroom!
