My students need a class set of a new thoughtful, engaging, and more culturally relevant novel, "One Crazy Summer."
Think back on the last book you read where you were completely inspired by the protagonist. In One Crazy Summer, Delphine does just that. My students need to experience reading and finishing a novel together. They have not had access to a new class set of novels due to lack of funding.
Our school is located in the downtown area of a larger city in California.
It is a public school which serves 600 students, 85% of whom qualify for a free or reduced lunch. They represents a myriad of backgrounds in race, culture, language, and religion. 6th graders come into middle school for the first time with big bright eyes that are ready for knowledge. It is the perfect time to deepen their love of reading and learning.
Set during a pivotal time during African American history, this novel portrays how political movements can affect personal lives, including young children. Because these historical changes are seen through the eyes of Delphine, a motherless 11-year old who has to look out for two younger sisters, my students will immediately connect to her voice, humor, and point of view. My students absolutely love to have the common experience of completing a novel as a whole class. However, our school does not have the funds to buy any new class sets of books. Having a brand new book in their hands, that their teacher is already so passionate to teach, will brighten their educational experience. Furthermore, the novel will speak to the admirable, yet fearful actions local heroes took to bring greater justice to American society. Students will participate in cycles of reading, academic discourse, and writing to master skills and standards.
My students need to read exceptional literature from talented authors of color that depict strong characters and strong family relationships.
They need to deepen their historical knowledge of a time period that has influenced our country greatly. They will do that through academically rigorous activities of reading and writing. In the end, I hope they will be inspired to be greater citizens in our community. hideûhide
