In our library, we love to read, complete hands-on centers, and learn through technology. Unfortunately this year we did not have a library book budget. My kids would love to have some new books to in the library, and I want to make sure that I have high interest books that will hold their attention and ensure they come back for more books!
My elementary school is considered to be Title One, and many of my students face issues at home that affect what they learn at school and how they behave at school.
Some students do not know where their next meal will come from or if they will have clean clothes to wear to school tomorrow. Focusing on education when basic needs are not being met is very difficult. My students face these challenges with composure and resiliency, and try to do their best to learn as much as they can each day.
I do the best that I can to prepare them for their futures, and providing them with new books that meet their interest and learning needs is not only my responsibility and job, but also my passion.
I want my students to have new books in the library that they can relate to and that address our diverse culture at Greenwood. I feel by purchasing small group sets of books teachers can use in class to read with students, they will be able to discuss the details and message each book is trying to tell the students. I also want to put books on the shelves that students will gravitate towards checking out, because they are high interest, have characters in them that they can relate to, and address issues they have on a daily basis in their everyday lives. I think that by using books that students can relate to will help students have a higher comprehension of the books, and it will help make learning easier for them.
