Our student population is racially and culturally diverse. We have approximately 350 preschool-6th graders this year, coming to us from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some of our students come to us from the three emergency shelters in our attendance area, some come from as far away as Mexico, Central America, China, Sudan, and the Congo. We have about 80% of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.
The diversity in our school provides our staff with as much opportunity to learn from the children every day, just as they do from us.
We are all lucky to have the opportunity to work and read and learn and play together every single day!
My Project
Many of our students don't have shelves of books in their homes, and depend on our school library for all of their reading wants and needs. This means that we need additional books for our library shelves to be fully-stocked with the newest and most beloved books at all times for student to take home and read on their own, or for grown-ups at home to read aloud to our students. We can't grow readers without great books!
Our diverse group of students have diverse reading needs.
While we have a budget a budget from the school district to use for updating our library collection, it never seems to be enough. Our budget has stayed the same for years, but book prices have not!
