This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students care about their world, and they care that younger students in the neighborhood surrounding our school have the opportunity to find themselves in books and become readers.
While my school is a selective enrollment STEM school, offering unique opportunities in math and science, my school is located in a high-poverty neighborhood.
My students strive to break down the barriers between our competitive school and the students who live nearby without as many resources as they have. This project is my students' effort to give our neighborhood educational, inspiring books.
My Project
My students are readers. And, as my high school readers reflect back on their early childhood reading experiences, they realize that, for some as female students and all as minority students, they were underrepresented in the children's literature they had access to. My students learned to love reading, but they feel they were lucky, and that many of their peers could not see themselves or their cultures in the books they could access.
Knowing this, my students decided to create a Little Free Library to make books that feature minority or female protagonists easily available in the neighborhood where our school is located.
Their goal was to give neighborhood kids a mirror in literature.
Their project was successful--Kids LOVE the library. However, kids love the library so much that we are running low on books, so this grant is designed to restock the library. My students have picked out the books based on the books that they've talked to our most frequent customers about, and based on the books that spoke powerfully to my students themselves. Your donation will enable my students to continue empowering younger kids in Chicago.
