My Students
My students are a diverse group of third graders, including English language learners. We are part of a large Title I public school in Brooklyn, NY, where many of the students are at-risk and/or come from low-income families.
As a community, we work together to provide the best educational experience for our students.
Through their motivation, hard work and the love and respect they display for themselves and others, they grow as scholars and members of society each and every day.
My Project
Every year, one of my goals as a teacher to grow a love of reading in all of my students. This love of readings helps support true engagement and gives meaning to "learning to read."
Each year, I work to make sure that the texts in our classroom library are relevant, engaging, and culturally responsive.
Often, a visitor in our classroom might find stacks of post-its on my desk with names of books or topics that kids want added to our library. The books we read should be interesting to us. For that reason, I allow students to request specific books that they want to read--even if they are already engaged readers!
This project will help me purchase those requested books! With many months of in person instructional missing due to responding physically and mentally to COVID-19, a love of reading is more important than ever.
