This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My ELL tenth grade students are all recent immigrants who are learning English as their second or third language. They are from more than 20 countries and speak more than 6 different languages.

My students are amazing recent immigrants who work part-time jobs, take care of family members, play sports and attend our after-school programs.

Boston is the third most expensive in the country. An average two-bedroom apartment costs about $2,400/month, and gentrification has led to some of my students and their families moving into shelters.

My Project

As gentrification and housing costs rise in Boston, many of my students and their families have financial struggles, and some students have had to move into shelters, group homes or other transitional housing. One of the greatest needs for students in transitional housing is a new and durable backpack because some students do not always feel comfortable leaving their belongings at home.

With a new school year comes new costs for families (school supplies, new clothes, etc), and your donation of 9 backpacks will help support students and their families.

With this project, I have made sure that there are a variety of colors for the backpacks so that students can feel confident matching their new backpack to their own individual style.
