New Art Program! Please Help Us Start A Class Library
My students need 16 art books; aside from my limited personal resources, our classroom has no hardcopy resources to assist in their growth and development.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students need books. Where are the books? That is the question I asked when I first looked in my school's library. I expected to hear "oh they just have not been put on the shelves", but instead I heard "those are all the books".
The students come from all over the city, they choose to come to this school for different reasons, but they come here out of choice.
They are smart and aspire to do amazing things, but they need resources to inspire and aide in this journey. Our school has amazing technology, science and math programs, but the students deserve an equally amazing art program. In order to provide an amazing arts program we need resources.
My Project
As a student one of my favorite things to do was sit in the library with a stack of books, thumbing through them, reading, and looking. This process ultimately served as inspiration to the ideas that followed. Some of those images still resonate today and are not always accessible in the quick google search we have come to be so reliant on. I want to provide my students with an art library where they can have similar experiences. I want them to discover artists that they have never heard of, but who have or are producing work that is meaningful and relevant to the student. I am asking for a variety of art books that will allow my students to read about art history, theory, and technique. They will be able to see the works of the art masters as well as contemporary artists who are continually working to change and expand upon the already rich and vast art history we know today.
The Internet presents us with an alternative method of seeing images and reading text.
We move through images and text on the internet with such rapidity we often miss that which we are seeking. Books allow students to go back again and again and refine their thoughts, truly understand and critically analyze that which they have discovered.
