This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My kindergarteners are energetic, deeply curious, bright, emotional, and eager to become more independent with every passing day. Our school is located in the West Chesterfield / Chatham neighborhood on the Far South Side of Chicago. Although the school is majority low-income and faces financial challenges associated with belonging to a large, urban school-district like CPS, the teachers, administrators, staff, and families at the school work tirelessly to provide an enriching, safe, and high-quality education.
I am excited to get to know my new group of kindergarteners at Gillespie.
They enjoy hands-on experiences, out-of-school learning trips, asking questions, and showing their developing independence.
My Project
This year, I hope to build a classroom community where play, collaboration, and creativity is promoted and honored. These materials will supplement the choices students can make during afternoon play centers (train set, watercolors, more wooden blocks) and provide materials necessary for instruction such as chart paper and more puzzles to support student problem-solving and reinforcement of foundational math and literacy concepts.
My students and I will use these materials every day across all the subject areas.
By supporting play, I hope to help develop more confident, self-driven, and inquisitive students who are able to solve problems, collaborate, and have fun.
