Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are natural-born scientists and explorers. They just don't know it yet! They are inquisitive, they want to learn, they're analytical, they crave new learning experiences, want to search for meaning and truth, share their own stories, and become agents of change to make the world a more verdant place. And it is my job to facilitate and give them access to the knowledge and the skills they need to get the answers and purpose they seek. We, like many public schools, struggle with purchasing new supplies, especially technology, and we must then rely on your generosity to fill in the financial and ultimately learning gaps that allow us to get the technology, experiences, and opportunities our students need to grow into passionate academics and global citizens.

My Project

My AP and IB students are required to learn and process a lot of content and skills throughout their course. Most of these projects and studies fall into two categories: empirical data collection via data logging software and probes for labs and experiments and secondly, artistic, content-based projects that tap their creative, service-learning side. One such project they will be planning is One-Minute Wonder videos that students create on topics related to Environmental Science and finally 3-5 minute fully-edited "EcoStories" videos that groups create to bring attention to a topic or issue also central to the study of environmental science. This computer will complement the existing fleet of three other Macs we have received from generous donors, as well as our class camera we previously received funding for. In addition, we can create virtual learning stations for our podcasts and CT-STEM modeling labs, as well as utilize this Mac in and out of the classroom for our field trips, remote projects, and remote presentations/teaching. This will allow them the power to create, edit, and present their videos.

Thanks to you and the additional access to a big-screen computer in our classroom, we can expose students to a modern, contemporary way to access their creative side.

This process of planning, creating, and editing their videos or projects will be empowering students through art and allow science and its concepts to mesh visually. It also creates a digital stage to potentially showcase a community service message, and show technological applied skills (i.e., data logging, coding, computer science, etc).
