Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kids are a diverse group of all ability levels and interests. We are a Title I school with nearly 100% free and reduced-price lunch. Our motto is 110%/No Excuses. The kids work hard, even coming to school on Saturdays for learning camps and staying after school almost daily for tutorials.
Hard work pays off!
We focus on a growth mindset and strive to be one of the top schools in the state, closing achievement gaps and earning distinction every year. We have built a strong community and true family by refusing to let barriers hold us back.
My Project
What does freedom mean to you? What does it mean to our students?
What does it mean to speak up for your freedom and to chase dreams without boundaries?
Many students at our school were impacted by Hurricane Harvey and many of our students do not have access to computers at home to type and learn about word processing. This year, we are going to be publishing our class autobiography. Through this project, students will be able to learn about the document processing software through Google Docs and Microsoft word. But most importantly we are learning the valuable lesson of sharing our own voice.
We will collaborate to draft, edit, and revise personal memoirs that will be published into a collective autobiography paperback. This project was inspired by the Freedom Writers, and gives students a chance to not only learn about technology, but also have the opportunity to become published authors before they even go to high school.
Students will write a story from their life that aims to inspire teenagers from their generation who may experience similar obstacles. After collaborating, we will publish our novel on Lulu books.
We need keyboards to type with and also laptops to access software that is not compatible with tablets and smart phones. The beauty of this project is that is a great vehicle through which to get students prepared for writing tasks in high school and college and gain familiarity with using laptops. With your help, we will be able to attain our college & career readiness goals. No storm can hold us back!
