Never Enough Books

Help me give my students books, books, books! We can never have enough quality books in the classroom. I would like to do a unit on how to read informational text, but need high-interest materials.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Smith's classroom raised $546

My Students

I have a very unique group of students. I have been inspired by their creativity and willingness to work. They tend to live fairly sheltered and protected lives and I'd like to expose them to worlds they never knew existed.

Luckily, they are a curious bunch and are up for a challenge.

They have been eager to dive into the curriculum and write essays about them, but they can do more than what the school district scripts for them. I want to give them as much as possible this year because they deserve it.

They are also a diverse group of kids from varied backgrounds and socioeconomic levels. I'd like to expose them to activities that go beyond the typical classroom 3 Rs. I have 21 boys and 7 girls, so needless to say, they are a rambunctious bunch! I'd like to have hands-on, STEM activities that involve technology and teamwork.

My Project

My sixth graders need and deserve examples of quality nonfiction reading material. They are eager to learn about the social world, its injustices and shocking disparities. At the same time, they are fascinated by geology, zoology, and astronomy. If I can foster a love of nonfiction reading at their young age, they will be better prepared to do the reading expected of them in high school and college.

Reading quality nonfiction that fosters critical thinking not only teaches them required subject matter such as ancient civilizations, but also how and why some civilizations flourished while others died out.

I can teach science and social studies during "reading" time because there are never enough hours in a day to do it all.
