This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This is a bright and active group of five- and six-year-old children. They love to create and tell stories. They love to read and be read to. They are quickly learning to work together which is a vital skill in our world. My children work in small groups and independently throughout the day.
We grow in all areas by practicing and playing together.
Writing throughout the day in science, social studies, math, and even in art helps us in so many ways. We get noisy, but we learn so much together. We need supplies to grow as readers, writers and illustrators. We need to show the colors of our ideas. There is so much to learn.
My Project
We are kindergarten. Many of my students had no school at all before joining my class. This has made the list of skills they must master extremely long. We need to practice reading and sight words. Many of us still need to master letters, which will happen when we practice with the bubbles and magnetic boards.
With these leveled readers, we will be able to share our reading growth with our parents, too.
We will take home these books and practice all the skills of reading. These include matching pictures to words, using beginning sounds and tracking as we read.
With these magnetic tools, we will work together, building social skills and increase fine motor abilities as we master letters, shapes and even words. These magnetic boards will be great partner activities.
Books must be organized in ways that make sense to five year olds, so they can find favorites, share conversations about books and even make connections from text to text. Book bins will help with these issues. These book bins will allow me to label books with levels and pictures to be supportive.
