My students are definitely an inquisitive bunch! These future medical professionals are enthusiastic about science, especially the human body. Each human physiology session is peppered with questions asking how structures work, what happens when structures malfunction and why structures look the way they do. I am pleased to say that they have been eager to gain as much knowledge before they leave for college.
Working together, our aim in class is to learn not only how the body works, but what we can do to keep our bodies healthy at both the large and small scale level.
Most students in the human physiology course are interested in the medical field with the aim of helping others, combat diseases, discover cures and create new ways to tackle today's public health issues. It is my hope that utilizing the Backyard Brains neuroscience kits will help students better understand abstract & unseen concepts like electrical transmission, action potentials, neurotransmitters, synapses, voluntary vs. involuntary responses, and conduction systems of the heart.
My Project
The Backyard Brains neuroscience kits will help bring abstract, technical, and sometimes confusing topics to life. Through hands-on activities, students will able to not only see, but experience the connection between the nervous and muscular system.
The kits will help showcase how the nervous system helps to stimulate muscle contraction and how important those electrical messages are to body movement in fun and interactive ways.
Honestly, who wouldn't want the opportunity to try to "control" another person's body movements or hook someone up to electrodes to observe the electrical messages being generated every time someone moves their arm?! I can definitely see these kits helping with understanding how our body systems work, but more importantly, sparking the imagination of our future medical professionals and scientists as they develop new tools and techniques to better treat those suffering from neurological injury.
