My Project
At Cox Academy, a Title I school in East Oakland, we are passionate about literacy as well as student inclusion and belonging. We believe that every student deserves to see themselves reflected in the books and stories that are shared in their classroom. Studies have shown that creating a personal connection to books and allowing students to choose what they read increases student engagement and creates positive feelings about reading.
We want to foster a life-long love of reading in our students, while at the same time introducing socio-emotional concepts in a way that is accessible to students and reflective of their cultures and heritages.
These three books, My Brother Charlie by Holly Robinson Peete, We're All Wonders Hardcover by R. J. Palacio, and Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson, teach students about neurodiversity and how differences can make us beautiful. This lesson on neurodiversity shows students have to have empathy for others who may look and act differently from themselves, and how an act of kindness can have a big impact on someone else. We thank you for your support and for believing that students in our school deserve access to quality literature that both reflects and broadens their experiences.
