My Students

I teach 4th grade high ability. High ability students have a harder time staying focused than most other students. Each day I strive to use materials and do activities that help the students focus and help them become more eager for knowledge.

My students come from a low poverty community.

Many of my students would say that the best part of their day is going to school. They have the opportunity to learn and have fun in a loving environment. Students really enjoy coming to school because they know that they have a teacher that cares for them and will give them whatever they need to help them succeed. When students come back to school after long breaks they always express how much they missed being at school, how much they missed the teachers, and their friends. When students go on long 2 week breaks I give them academic packets they can complete while over break during their free time; more than half of my class completed the packet this year at fall break. These students know and understand the importance of education. I would love to be able to continue giving them more resources that will encourage them to continue building their education.

My Project

My students will use the Nelson Mandela books to increase their reading abilities and knowledge about the history involving Nelson Mandela. while reading the Nelson Mandela books we will be focusing heavily on text features, determining main idea, and other skills related to nonfiction material. After we have completed our language arts unit students will participate in a research project based on Nelson Mandela. They will be reaching out to online resources to compare their finishing from the book with online sources.

I think this project will make a big difference and improve the eagerness to learn in my classroom.

My students have expressed wanting to read different types of books as a class but without money we can't do that. This project will also give my students the opportunity to use their skills with a novel that they are being taught. Often times students can't find novels that they can easily relate classroom skills to. Thank you for your time and consideration.
