Neighborhood Photo Project

Help me give my students the opportunity to take analog photos during their study of the school's neighborhood. This list contains enough cameras for all 2nd graders to share as they take photos during a neighborhood walk.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

All 2nd graders will be studying the neighborhood, and taking a neighborhood walk during art class explore what they notice. During this unit, as they prepare to create collages of neighborhood buildings, they will create photo books about their experience in the neighborhood. These cameras are to enable them to capture what they notice during the neighborhood walk, and to give them an authentic experience with analog photography.

The purpose of this photo project is for students to develop and share their unique perspective on the neighborhood that surrounds the school.

Our school neighborhood (Bushwick) is famous for its street art and its gentrification. My students have a relationship with the neighborhood that may be separate from this. This project asks them to express their experience of the neighborhood by taking photos, binding them into a book, and writing a caption for each photo. It is their opportunity to shape what we see about their neighborhood. While the project's main focus is on the students expressing their experiences of the neighborhood, it also gives them experience with photography - a medium which they may only know as being digital and instantaneous.

After the students take photos during the walk, I will have the photos developed and printed. My plan is to crowd-source funding from the PTA to pay for the film to be developed. The students will then organize their photos into their own book, bind the book with brads or yarn, and write about each photo. Their books will be shared at a community event at the school.
