Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I need your help in providing my students with contemporary novels that they can relate to but that also challenge their present mindset and expand their understanding of the world in which they live. The novels I've selected, "I Am Malala", "Out of My Mind", and "Pax" are three such novels.

Good literature allows us to voyage to destinations, times, and events we'd not thought possible or perhaps never considered.

Our curriculum only provides brief excerpts from a few novels, but my students want to read the entire story. Imagine picking up "I Am Malala" and reading about what it's like to live one's young life under an oppressive regime. Inviting my students to read about how Malala triumphed despite horrific adversity, I hope to inspire them to dream and appreciate the opportunities that accompany a good education.

So many of my students will relate to Peter, the protagonist of "Pax" (another of the novels I'm requesting), as we explore issues such as abandonment, complex relationships, and feelings of loyalty and hope.

Having access to award-winning, high-interest stories encourage my students to read, aids in the development of rich vocabulary and improves their story-telling prowess.

Ms. Shannon Danley will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by September 2.
