My Students

The school where I have taught for sixteen years serves a population from different ability levels and social classes: from poverty to the working class. I have some students that barely come into class with a binder and a pencil. When I ask them to bring supplies, it is a challenge.

Yearly, I have many talented and creative students, with unreached potential, in my Earth Science class.

My students love to use their creative talents on the projects that I assign to them. In fact, many of them challenge themselves to work harder each time I assign different projects.

These students are eager to learn science and complete the assigned tasks throughout the year. However, many of my students lack the supplies that will help them complete their assignments or projects to their satisfaction. Many times they are unable to implement their plans or ideas.

My Project

I use science journals, the one subject notebooks, as an Interactive Notebook. Interactive Notebooks are a helpful tool for students to stay organized as they are taking notes. For each lesson, there is a lot of information that the students need to remember. The use of notebooks helps them stay focused on the important information. Students are able to study the notes for quizzes with ease. Since I have started using the Interactive Notebooks, I have noticed their retention of the key science concepts and their scores improving.

As part of the notebook, I find notes that need to be cut out and glued into the journals.

For example, I teach the Water Cycle during the first unit. The students have to cut off the excess paper so that it will fit into the notebook. If a student does not have the needed supplies, it makes it difficult to create his or her notebooks.

The colored pencils are used in their notebooks to add color to their notes. Adding color helps the students to retain the lesson's content with ease. The colored pencils will also be used for various projects throughout the year. The Spheres Poster, Rock Cycle, and the Phases of the Moon Poster are major projects that my students will be completing this year. The supplies will help my students succeed and reach their potential in science.
