I have a wonderful group of second graders. They are all individuals with individual needs. We begin the year by creating a community in our classroom. We learn each others names and interests. I emphasize that each one of them is going to get what they need to grow as a student this year. They know that fair does not mean that everyone gets the same thing. Fair means everyone gets what they need.
I have students from varied backgrounds that benefit from explicit small group and whole group instruction, as well as opportunities to be part of our classroom community.
Community is important in our classroom. Students are more likely to do their best when they feel connected to each other, their teacher and the classroom. Having comfortable work spaces allows the children to feel at home in our classroom, and helps them to develop connections in our classroom.
My students will benefit from the plush padded carpet to sit on during our classroom teaching time. The carpet will be front and center in our whole group learning space. It will help define the area as well as allow students to sit more comfortably on the floor and attend during lessons.
The flexible seating options will allow boys and girls who struggle to stay seated during work time the opportunity to move around and still stay seated.
This will help them to focus on their work and complete assignments because they won't have to move around the classroom to get their wiggles out.
