This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work as a First Grade ICT (Integrative Collaborative Team) teacher in Bushwick, Brooklyn. My students are a mixture of, both, Special Education and General Education students. Most of my students are of Latino descent and are English Language Learners. My children do not have it easy. Many of my students’ parents do not speak English, some come from foster homes, and some live in shelters. Many of them do not know when or where their next meal is coming from. Yet these children come to school every single day with smiles on their faces, ready and willing to learn. My students have so much potential to excel in school and beyond, but they do not have the proper tools and materials in order to do so.
My Project
Students often find reading boring. That may be because they are asked to read quietly at their desks. I believe that students will find reading more enjoyable if they have a space where they can go to in order to relax and read. I would like to set up a space in the corner of my room which would be nicely decorated, filled with books and with a few bean bags for students to go to when they’d like to read. All we are missing for this amazing space are a few bean bags and I know that with your help this can happen!
