My students need 42 copies of Albert Camus' novel "The Stranger" to learn about existential philosophy and to study the literary devices that contribute to this masterpiece of world literature.

Intellectual sponges is how I characterize my A.P. English Literature and Composition students. Once I used the word "existential" in a discussion of the character of Edgar in "King Lear," my sponges have demanded a unit that includes the history of existential philosophy and a work of literature that makes it all make sense. Making sense of existentialism--now that is a challenge! My kids, I mean sponges, do not get to read their own copies of books--they must read from a class set. With this special request, they need a copy to read at home, giving them the time to digest the subtleties of the novel and to contemplate the questions they want to discuss.

My students never get to take home a copy of the book we are reading. A class set is 30 copies. When I have 42 or 101 students reading a book, they must share the 30 available and read in a crowded, distracting, and often loud classroom.

I need 42 copies of the novel so that my students feel like their interests are valued and that they can be "real" college-ready readers.

Your help is my only chance. I have already spent my savings on last semester's "Othello" books. But I don't regret giving them the chance to really read.
